Getting married in and around Clitheroe

Most of the wedding venues near Clitheroe sit a few miles outside the town, along the lanes towards Bashall Eaves, Waddington and West Bradford. In the town itself there are two very different choices: the Clock Tower, the register office ceremony room on the second floor of Clitheroe Library, which holds 45, and Holmes Mill, where the Spinning Block Hotel takes up to 150 for the ceremony and wedding breakfast and has 39 bedrooms.

Out of town the venues are larger and most offer exclusive use. Eaves Hall at West Bradford seats 120 for the ceremony and wedding breakfast, with 250 in the evening, 30 bedrooms and outdoor ceremonies. Bashall Barn seats 130 and has 12 bedrooms. The Out Barn near Waddington seats 150 and asks couples to book their own caterer from an approved list. The Red Pump Inn at Bashall Eaves seats 80 and has 8 bedrooms, and the Calf's Head at Worston, a village pub with 12 rooms, is also on the council's approved list.

Published starting prices range from the Out Barn's weekday intimate package for up to 25 guests to full packages at Holmes Mill and Eaves Hall. Each venue page shows what its price covers and links to where the venue publishes it, because the cheapest headline price is often for a quiet season or a small wedding.

To marry anywhere in Lancashire you first give notice at a register office, at least 29 days before the wedding. Clitheroe's registration office at Ribble House takes notices by appointment on Mondays and Wednesdays.

For couples who marry at the Clock Tower and then celebrate, there are reception venues close to the town: Clitheroe Golf Club seats 120 for private celebrations, the 3 Millstones at West Bradford takes small functions of up to 60 and has rooms, Downham Village Hall hires out the whole hall for a weekend, and the Hideaway Cabaret takes private parties of up to 90 in the evening.

When you compare the Clitheroe venues, line up three things first: seated numbers, what the starting price covers, and catering. The Out Barn asks couples to bring a caterer from its approved list, the Red Pump Inn allows either its own food or yours, and Holmes Mill, Eaves Hall and Bashall Barn cater in-house. A cheaper hire fee can cost more once outside catering, staff and furniture are added, so ask each venue for a quote for your own numbers and date.

Exclusive use is common around Clitheroe: Eaves Hall, Bashall Barn, the Out Barn and the Red Pump Inn all offer it, and the Rum Fox at Grindleton takes private hire of the whole pub. If you would rather marry at the register office and celebrate elsewhere, the Clock Tower is a short walk from the town centre pubs and restaurants, and the Rum Fox, which is not on the council list, suits a reception after a ceremony there.

Whatever you choose, ask each venue what time music must stop and whether outside suppliers are allowed.
